One of the pressing issues we are facing in 2009 is the interpretation and implementation of the requirements of the new Oregon Smokefree Workplace Law (ORS 433.835-870). It specifically addresses notice posting requirements for the entrances of commercial buildings and businesses. In general, there is no smoking allowed within 10 feet of building entrances, exits, windows, and air intake vents. As the property manager, we are implementing a plan to get our client’s properties in compliance with the new state law, especially since the implementation date was January 1, 2009. Commercial building owners and tenants are referred to www.healthoregon.org/smokefree for more information. Of course, I am also interested in hearing from my client owners and tenants if they have any questions or comments regarding this new law or its implementation at commercial properties and businesses.

Now that we are almost 6 months into the new law, this issue doesn't seem to be a big one. Most tenants are very cooperative and its politically incorrect to oppose this new requirement.
